A woman waiting for the traffic light to change. Someone new sitting beside me at an outdoor concert. Before we&#8217;ve exchanged more than a few words, my mind has already started filling in the blanks. I notice how they dress, how they speak, how they carry themselves, and almost without realizing it, I begin writing an internal story about who they are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don&#8217;t think there&#8217;s anything unusual about that. Our minds are constantly trying to make sense of the world. We recognize patterns. We connect experiences. We make educated guesses. It&#8217;s one of the ways we navigate a complicated world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But lately I&#8217;ve been wondering what happens if I quietly set all of that aside. Not because my first impressions are necessarily wrong. But because they&#8217;re almost certainly incomplete.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The woman waiting at the traffic light has a story I can&#8217;t see.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The man standing in front of me at the grocery store has a story I can&#8217;t see.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every person I meet is carrying a story I can&#8217;t see.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That one thought has quietly changed the way I look at people. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don&#8217;t have to guess what their story is. I simply remind myself that it&#8217;s there. Behind every smile is a lifetime of experiences. Behind every hurried conversation is a life that&#8217;s been shaped by joys, disappointments, hopes, fears, and countless ordinary days that I know nothing about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s where curiosity begins for me. Not with clever questions or trying to figure someone out. But with the quiet realization that there&#8217;s so much more to this person than I can see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve discovered that when I approach someone that way, conversations become different. People often begin talking about what&#8217;s important to them. Sometimes it&#8217;s something joyful. Sometimes it&#8217;s something difficult. Sometimes it&#8217;s simply a small part of their day that mattered more than anyone else realized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And more often than not, I find myself thinking the same quiet thought. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I never would have guessed that.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve come to believe that curiosity isn&#8217;t about collecting information. It&#8217;s about leaving room for another person to surprise me. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll probably never know the story of the woman waiting for the traffic light.
