Life only happens one day at a time.<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n

I’ve been noticing something about myself lately: I spend a surprising amount of time somewhere other than today. Sometimes it’s tomorrow. Sometimes it’s next week. Sometimes it’s a conversation that happened yesterday that I’m still replaying in my mind. Meanwhile, today keeps moving along without asking for much attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

A while ago I poured myself a cup of coffee and sat down on the porch. I had every intention of enjoying a quiet morning. Instead, I spent the next fifteen minutes thinking about things that hadn’t happened yet. When I finally looked up, my coffee cup was empty.<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn’t a bad morning. Nothing had gone wrong. I had simply been living somewhere else.<\/span><\/p>\n

The more I thought about it, the more I realized how often this happens. We prepare for tomorrow because tomorrow matters. We remember yesterday because yesterday shaped us. There’s nothing wrong with either of those. But life itself only happens one day at a time. It can’t be lived next Tuesday. It can’t be relived last Thursday. It only ever unfolds today. That seems almost too obvious to mention; until I realize how easily I forget it.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I look back over my life, I don’t remember every day. But the life I remember was built one ordinary day at a time. Meals around the kitchen table. Long conversations that weren’t planned. An afternoon that quietly became a friendship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

None of those days announced themselves as important. They were simply the days I happened to be living.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m noticing now that life rarely asks us to pay attention to it. It simply keeps showing up. One morning, one conversation, one walk, one ordinary Tuesday after another. And before long, those ordinary days become a lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m still planning for tomorrow. Tomorrow matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

But I’m also hoping to notice today while it’s still today. We spend time preparing for what’s ahead, and that’s part of living responsibly. Yet somewhere in all that planning, I don’t want to lose sight of the day that’s quietly unfolding in front of me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because today isn’t practice for life. Today is life.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I’ve begun to think that life isn’t mostly made up of the extraordinary days. It’s made up of thousands of ordinary ones\u2026 one day at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
